The goal of The Heart section of our program is to cultivate character.
This second phase concentrates on personal character development.
This step is critical in shaping individuals into exemplary followers of Christ, whose lives and actions reflect their deep-rooted faith and integrity.
The Heart module will help develop character through the following courses:
Knowing Your Spiritual Gift
This course is designed to help participants identify and understand their unique spiritual gift as outlined in the Scriptures. Through a combination of biblical teaching, self-assessment tools, and practical exercises, students will learn how their gifts can be used in various ministry contexts to serve the body of Christ effectively. The course aims to empower each individual to contribute to their community in ways that align with their divine calling and personal strengths.
The Importance of Spiritual Care
This course emphasizes the biblical mandate for believers to care for one another spiritually. Participants will explore different aspects of spiritual care, including pastoral counseling, prayer, spiritual mentoring, and crisis intervention. The curriculum covers both theoretical concepts and practical applications, teaching students how to provide compassionate and effective spiritual support to others, both within the church environment and in broader community settings.
Spiritual Leadership
Focusing on the qualities and responsibilities of a spiritual leader, this course draws on biblical examples and contemporary leadership theories. Participants will study the characteristics of godly leadership, such as integrity, humility, and vision, and how these can be applied in leading others towards spiritual growth and community engagement. The course also addresses practical leadership challenges and how to navigate them with wisdom and grace.
Discipleship Lessons from Luke
This course delves into the Gospel of Luke to extract key principles of discipleship. Participants will examine the teachings and methods of Jesus as He mentored His disciples, focusing on themes like obedience, prayer, mission, and community. Through interactive discussions and reflective studies, students will learn how to apply these principles in their own lives and ministries, enhancing their ability to disciple others effectively.
As each course is completed, members will further equip themselves as disciple makers.
Through the Heart courses, each Sojourner Discipleship member is expected to achieve specific outcomes, including:
✓ Incorporates practical exercises and reflective discussions to encourage participants to examine their behaviors and motivations through the lens of biblical teachings.
✓ Stresses the importance of consistent personal growth and self-examination, aiding individuals in aligning their actions and attitudes more closely with Christ’s teachings.
✓ Emphasizes the role of community in character development.
Additionally, the Heart courses emphasizes the development of practical skills that enhance the effectiveness of participants in various aspects of life:
✓ Engages participants in small group interactions and accountability partnerships, providing both support and challenges.
✓ Through communal interactions, mentees learn the value of humility, forgiveness, and grace.
✓ Helps participants build relationships that reflect the love of Christ and live out their faith authentically in everyday situations.
These skills are integral for participants to serve effectively in their families, small groups, and broader communities.
By integrating these elements, the Sojourner Discipleship program at Journey Community Church not only addresses the need for a structured discipleship program but also ensures that each participant is equipped to lead and serve in a manner that embodies the teachings and example of Jesus Christ.
This comprehensive approach ensures that the church not only grows in number but also in spiritual maturity and impact.
